Kilimanjaro does not demand technical climbing skill, but it does ask you to walk slowly for many consecutive days at altitude. The best preparation is not extreme fitness. It is durable fitness: strong legs, calm breathing, comfortable feet and the confidence that comes from time on a trail.

Weeks 1–4: build a dependable base

Walk or hike three times each week, beginning with comfortable sessions of 45 to 90 minutes. Add two simple strength sessions built around squats, step-ups, lunges, calf raises and core stability.

Keep most sessions easy enough to hold a conversation. Consistency prepares you better than occasional exhausting weekends.

  • Three aerobic sessions each week
  • Two controlled strength sessions
  • One complete rest day

Weeks 5–8: add hills and your daypack

Move one weekly walk onto hills or stairs and gradually extend a weekend hike to four or five hours. Wear the boots, socks and daypack you will use on the mountain.

Back-to-back walking days teach your body to move on tired legs. They are more useful than trying to run faster.

  • Carry water, rain layers and three to five kilograms
  • Practise eating small snacks while moving
  • Test blister prevention before the trip

Weeks 9–12: practise the rhythm, then taper

Your longest walks should come three to four weeks before departure. In the final ten days, reduce volume and arrive rested rather than trying to gain last-minute fitness.

Training supports the climb, but it cannot replace acclimatisation. Choose a route with enough days and let your guides set the deliberately slow pace.

Share your dates and experience level — we'll recommend a route and acclimatisation profile, and can add a safari or Zanzibar recovery afterwards.
