Zanzibar's coasts are genuinely different from each other. Tides, seaweed seasons and atmosphere vary enough that the wrong choice can disappoint.
North — Nungwi and Kendwa
Swimmable at all tides, lively, good sunsets and the widest range of hotels. Best for first-timers and short stays.
East — Paje and Jambiani
Big tidal shifts, kitesurfing, laid-back village atmosphere and better value. Seaweed is more common in some months.
South-east and Pemba — the quiet end
Very few people, excellent diving and the most private lodges. Best for honeymoons and longer stays.
