The best time to visit Zanzibar, month by month

Zanzibar is warm all year — the real variables are rain, humidity, wind and how full the island feels. Here is what each month actually delivers, and how we match it to the kind of trip our guests want.

The short version

June to October is the safest bet: dry, breezy, sunny, and perfectly aligned with peak safari season. December to February is hot, calm and excellent underwater. March to May is the long rains — cheap, green and unpredictable.

  • Best overall: June, July, August, September, October
  • Best for diving and calm seas: December, January, February
  • Best value: March, April, May, November
  • Most likely to disappoint: mid-April to mid-May

June to October — the dry, breezy season

Daytime highs sit around 28–30°C with low humidity and a steady south-easterly breeze that makes the heat easy. Rain is rare and short. This is also when the Serengeti is at its best, so most safari-and-beach itineraries land here.

The trade-off is demand: the best Matemwe and Michamvi hotels sell out four to six months ahead for July and August, and again over the New Year.

November — short rains, good value

Brief afternoon showers, warm sea, thinner crowds and noticeably lower rates. Rain rarely lasts more than an hour, which makes November one of the island's quiet bargains.

December to February — hot, still and clear underwater

Temperatures climb to 32–34°C with higher humidity and very little wind. The sea goes glassy, visibility for divers is at its best, and whale sharks appear off Mafia Island in the same window.

Christmas and New Year are the most expensive two weeks of the year, with minimum-stay rules at most good hotels.

March to May — the long rains

Rain arrives in heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle, but April and early May can genuinely wash out a week. Seaweed accumulates on the east coast, some boutique hotels close for maintenance, and boat excursions are cancelled more often.

If your dates are fixed here, choose the north coast, pick a hotel with strong indoor space, and accept the discount as fair compensation.

How to choose for your trip type

Honeymoons: June, September, October or February — reliable weather without the peak-August crush. Families: July and August for dry days and safe swimming. Divers: January and February. Budget travellers: November or early March.
