Safari packing is about layers, neutral colours and restraint. Camps do laundry, light aircraft have weight limits, and you will wear the same three shirts more than you expect.
Clothing
Mornings on the crater rim can be near freezing; midday on the plains is hot. Layers solve this better than any single garment.
- Neutral khaki, olive and beige — avoid black and dark blue (tsetse flies)
- A warm fleece and windproof layer for early drives
- Wide-brim hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen
- One smart-casual outfit for lodge dinners
Gear
Binoculars change your safari more than any camera upgrade. Bring your own pair if you can.
- 8x42 binoculars per person
- Spare camera batteries and memory cards
- Universal adapter (Tanzania uses UK-style plugs)
- Soft duffel bag if you have internal flights
What you can leave behind
Hard suitcases, heavy tripods, formal wear and large toiletry kits. Camps provide toiletries, and space in the vehicle is shared.
