After sunset, familiar landscapes change character. Genets, civets, porcupines, bush babies and hunting predators become possible, while sound and patience matter more than distance covered.
Night drives are location-specific
National-park and concession rules differ. Some private areas and selected parks permit guided night drives, while standard daytime routes may close at sunset.
Your itinerary should name the location and operator rather than promising a night drive everywhere.
What the spotlight may reveal
Reflective eyes can lead to small carnivores, nocturnal primates and grazing animals. Guides scan slowly, listen for alarm calls and switch off lights when an animal shows stress.
Large predators are possible but never guaranteed. The atmosphere itself—stars, cool air and hidden movement—is much of the appeal.
Responsible viewing
Red filters or indirect light can reduce disturbance, and sensitive animals should never be chased or surrounded. Flash photography may be restricted.
