The perfect 7-day Zanzibar itinerary: beach, reef and Stone Town

A week is when Zanzibar reveals its second layer — the difference between tide and wind, village and town, reef and mangrove. With seven days you never have to choose between doing something and doing nothing; you get both. This day-by-day plan follows the same logic as our Zanzibar travel guide pillar — start there to pick your coast, then use this itinerary to pace the week.

Day 1: Arrival and settling in

Fly in and transfer to your coast. Unpack properly — you are here for a week, and a slow first evening sets the tone. Dinner at your hotel, feet in the sand, nothing more.

Day 2: Your coast, properly

Keep day two deliberately local. Learn your beach's tide rhythm, swim at high water, walk the flats at low. If you are on the east coast, watch the seaweed farmers; if you are in the north, swim whenever you like.

This is also the day to book the week's two or three excursions with your hotel or guide, so the best slots are held and bad-weather flexibility is preserved.

Day 3: Mnemba atoll snorkelling or diving

The reef day. Mnemba's coral gardens are the finest in the archipelago, and certified divers can add wall dives with regular turtle and dolphin sightings. Morning departure, lunch back at the hotel, an easy afternoon.

  • Snorkelling suits everyone; divers should pre-book with a PADI centre
  • Bring a dry bag — boats are wet rides
  • Evening: sundowners at your own beach bar

Day 4: Safari Blue or a sandbank lunch

The south-west's Safari Blue is a full day of dhow sailing, lagoons, sandbanks and a grilled-seafood lunch — Zanzibar's signature water excursion. Travellers who prefer privacy can book a private sandbank picnic from the Michamvi or Fumba side instead.

Either way, you are out on the water from mid-morning to late afternoon. Keep the evening simple.

Day 5: Jozani forest and a spice farm

The inland day, and it pairs well: Jozani Chwaka Bay forest in the morning for red colobus monkeys and the mangrove boardwalk, then a working spice farm on the way back north.

You will be back at the beach by mid-afternoon. This is also a natural day to move hotels if you are splitting the week between two coasts — east for the quiet start, north for the social finish.

Day 6: Stone Town overnight

Check out of the beach and spend your last night in Stone Town. Walk the alleys with a guide, visit the slave market memorial and Darajani market, shop for spices and textiles, then rooftop sunset and the Forodhani night market.

Sleeping in town turns an early flight from a 4 a.m. beach transfer into a ten-minute taxi — the single best logistics trick in Zanzibar.

Day 7: Departure

A last Stone Town coffee, a slow breakfast, and the airport minutes away. You leave having seen the island rather than just its shoreline.

Common questions about a 7-day Zanzibar trip

Is seven days too long? Not if you split it — five nights on the coast plus two excursion days and a Stone Town night fills a week without a single wasted morning. If you want pure rest, five days may suit you better.

Can I combine seven days of Zanzibar with a safari? Comfortably — our most popular pairing is six nights on the northern circuit followed by a week on the island, connected by direct Arusha–Zanzibar flights. The pillar guide explains the routing.

When should I go? June to October for dry-season reliability alongside safari season; December to February for calm, hot, honeymoon-perfect water. Our month-by-month Zanzibar guide breaks down every month.

What will we pack? Reef shoes, a rash vest, one modest outfit for Stone Town, and far fewer clothes than you think — the island is barefoot from breakfast onward.

Can you build this for us? Yes — we design Zanzibar weeks to follow your safari seamlessly, matching coasts and hotels to your comfort tier. Share your dates and we will send a day-by-day proposal.
