Five days is where Zanzibar stops feeling like a stopover and starts feeling like a holiday. It is the length we recommend most after a northern-circuit safari: long enough to slow down properly, short enough to fit inside a two-week trip. This is the exact pacing we build for our guests — read it alongside our complete Zanzibar travel guide, which explains how to choose your coast and season before you follow this plan.
Day 1: Arrive and do absolutely nothing
Fly into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport from Arusha, a Serengeti airstrip, Dar es Salaam or Nairobi, and take a private transfer to your beach hotel — allow 60–90 minutes depending on the coast.
Resist the urge to book anything on day one. If you have come from safari, your body needs an afternoon with no schedule. Swim, walk the beach, eat early and sleep. The trip improves measurably for it.
Day 2: Mnemba atoll snorkelling
Start with the island's best water while your energy is high. A morning boat to Mnemba atoll gives you the clearest snorkelling in Zanzibar — reef fish, turtles and coral gardens in calm, shallow water. Go early, be back for lunch, and keep the afternoon free.
If wind is forecast for later in your stay, front-loading the boat day is the smart move — you keep a spare day to rebook. Our best time to visit Zanzibar guide explains the wind patterns by month.
- Depart your hotel around 08:30, back by early afternoon
- Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest beat extra sunscreen bottles
- Afternoon: pool, nap, and a sunset walk on the tide flats
Day 3: Stone Town, then sunset at Forodhani
Take a morning drive to Stone Town and walk it with a local guide — the carved doors, the Old Fort, the former slave market memorial and Darajani market carry five centuries of Swahili, Omani and Indian history in a few square kilometres.
Stay through the afternoon for a coffee in a hidden courtyard, then watch the sun go down from a rooftop before the Forodhani night market fires up its grills. Head back to the coast after dinner, or spend the night in town if your flight home is early.
Day 4: Spice farm or Jozani forest — pick one
Your second excursion day. A working spice farm with a good guide is genuinely fascinating — vanilla, clove, cinnamon and cardamom pulled straight from the tree. Jozani Chwaka Bay forest is the alternative: a short, easy walk among endemic red colobus monkeys and mangrove boardwalks.
Both are half-day trips. The point of day four is the afternoon back on the beach, so choose one and keep the evening slow.
Day 5: Last swim and departure
Most international connections leave in the evening, which means a full last morning. Book a late checkout or a day room, swim at high tide, and let the hotel arrange the airport transfer with time to spare.
Common questions about a 5-day Zanzibar trip
Is five days enough? Yes — for beach, Stone Town and two excursions. If you want to split your stay between two coasts, consider seven days instead.
Should we do safari first or beach first? Always safari first, beach second — you want the 5 a.m. game drives behind you before the slow mornings begin. See how the flights connect in our pillar guide to combining Zanzibar with a safari.
Which coast for five days? Matemwe or the Michamvi peninsula for quiet and reef access; Nungwi or Kendwa if you want swimming at any tide and more life after dark.
What does it cost? Expect roughly 30–40% less per day than a safari, with the biggest saving on park fees. We build 5-day Zanzibar stays as a natural extension of our Tanzania itineraries — tell us your dates and we will shape the coast around your safari.
