Safari and sea is the most requested shape of trip in Tanzania, and for good reason: the plains ask a lot of you at dawn, and the Indian Ocean gives it back. The difference between a smooth combination and a tiring one is almost entirely in the routing.
Safari first, beach second — always
Game drives start before sunrise and reward energy. Do them while you are fresh, then unwind on the coast. Reversing the order tends to make the safari feel like an interruption.
Realistic day counts
Four nights on safari and four on Zanzibar is the shortest combination that feels unhurried. Seven and five is the sweet spot for travellers coming a long way.
- 3 nights safari + 3 nights Zanzibar — short and brisk
- 4 nights safari + 4 nights Zanzibar — balanced and popular
- 6 to 7 nights safari + 5 nights Zanzibar — the full experience
The flights that make it work
Light aircraft connect the Serengeti airstrips to Zanzibar via Arusha, usually as a single ticketed hop with a brief stop. Flying out of the Serengeti in the morning puts you on a Zanzibar beach the same afternoon.
Travelling from Zanzibar in the other direction, our fly-in safaris include the Zanzibar to Arusha flight on day one and the return on the final day, so you never lose a day to road transfers.
Choosing your stretch of coast
The north around Nungwi and Kendwa has swimmable water at all tides and lively evenings. The east coast is quieter with strong tidal movement. The southwest around Fumba and Paje suits kitesurfing and privacy.
