There is no bad month for a Tanzania safari, but each month rewards a different traveller. Wildlife density, migration position, rainfall, road conditions, crowds and price all shift through the year. Use this as a planning map rather than a verdict.
January to March — calving season and warm plains
The southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains fill with wildebeest calves, and predator activity is at its highest of the year. Skies are bright with short afternoon showers, and the short grass makes for exceptional photography.
This is also a strong window for Kilimanjaro and for combining safari with Zanzibar, which is hot and clear.
April and May — the green season
The long rains bring dramatic skies, lush landscapes and the lowest rates of the year. Some remote camps close and a few roads soften, but the parks are quiet and birdlife is superb.
If you want to travel well on a smaller budget and do not mind rain in the afternoons, this is the most underrated window in Tanzania.
June to July — the dry season begins
Vegetation thins, water sources shrink and animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes. Tarangire's elephant numbers peak, and the migration pushes into the western corridor and the Grumeti.
Comfortable temperatures and reliable sightings make this the classic first-safari window.
August to October — river crossings and peak game viewing
The Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti happen in this window, and general game viewing across the north is at its best. It is also the busiest and most expensive period, so camps should be secured well in advance.
November and December — short rains and green renewal
Brief afternoon showers freshen the plains and the herds begin moving south again. Early November is quiet and good value; the festive period from mid-December is peak season once more.
Choosing your window in one line
Want river crossings? August to October. Want newborns and predators? January to March. Want value and green landscapes? April, May or early November.
